I've always enjoyed watching Segundo Copello play polo at different tournaments around Germany, and so was thrilled to find he had made his polo home in Polo Club Landsberg-Ammersee. Segundo's a quiet, thoughtful man and I was interested to find out what his plans would be for the club which had drifted into a bit of a dream-time existence over the last few years. So early this sunny spring morning I went over to the club to see what was happening. It was all go with the stables being mucked out, ponies being led out to pastures or being shoed ready for chukkers or lessons later. Segundo sat down for a moment with me and we had a quick chat.
Segundo, why did you choose to base yourself in Polo Club Landsberg-Ammersee?
I always liked the club and am keen to restart it. It's situated close to Munich but also to Landsberg and various towns around the Lake Ammer. I saw the possibility of reviving action here, increasing the number of chukkers being played in southern Germany. The more clubs and chukkers we have, the better it is for polo. I started here in 2025 with Cirilo Allende, but our plans were shattered by really bad weather on our polo weekends. This year will be much better, I'm sure.
So what's the master plan, Segundo?
This year we want to focus more on our polo school and especially on lessons with kids. We want to start promoting polo in the schools and feel this is a great way to grow.
You have two children of your own and I'm sure they'll soon be part of this growth, but how will you get the word out to the schools here?
I realize it won't be easy, but we know parents with children in schools in the area and we'll be enrolling their help. Of course we'll also use social media, flyers and via your blog, Jan! How many followers do you have? If you get over 3 thousand I might pay you😊

And I might hold you to that, Segundo! In the meantime what's coming up on your agenda apart from the polo lessons?
We're planning a Polo Weekend on the 23-24 May and already have quite a few players interested in joining us. It's not a tournament. The idea is for players to enjoy a no pressure, inexpensive event. A sort of reunion, getting to know each other and getting to know us. Just fun, friends, chukkers and an asado afterwards.
On 10-12 July we'll have our low goal tournament, and again we don't want to make it too expensive. We're looking at a maximum of 6 teams.
Sounds good, Segundo. In fact it sounds very much like the original blue print we had when we started the club back in the day. But what's your long term goal?
My plan is for us to play chukkers 3 times a week, and for that, we need more members. We're looking for a healthy number of polo students and really want to work to bring more people into polo. We'll leave the glamorous high-goal tournaments to other clubs.
Goals worth achieving, Segundo. You definitely get my thumbs up. 👍
Thank you Jan.
My pleasure, Segundo.
